Clean Install Windows 11: Optimized Setup Order

A clean, supportable post-install sequence for updates, drivers, apps, gaming settings, recovery and benchmarks.

Before wiping anything

Back up files and browser/profile data, export application licenses where required, confirm cloud sync completed and save BitLocker recovery keys. Inventory the exact edition and activation state. Download network drivers and official Windows installation media. A clean install deletes applications and can delete every file on the selected partitions.

Installation source

Use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page and Media Creation Tool or ISO. Verify the target disk carefully. Disconnect extra data drives if that reduces the chance of selecting the wrong disk or placing boot files on another drive.

First-boot order

  1. Complete setup, connect to a trusted network and let activation settle.
  2. Run Windows Update repeatedly, including required restarts. Review optional drivers rather than selecting every preview automatically.
  3. Install current OEM/motherboard chipset, platform and device drivers where Windows did not provide the correct package.
  4. Install the GPU driver from the OEM, NVIDIA, AMD or Intel as appropriate.
  5. Confirm Device Manager has no unknown devices and Windows Security is healthy.
  6. Install applications from official sources using winget, Store or Ninite where helpful.
  7. Restore data after the stable platform is established.

Configure the baseline

Enable System Protection and create a restore point. Configure Windows Backup or another tested backup. Set display refresh rate and scaling, power mode, Storage Sense, startup apps, Game Mode, windowed optimizations and per-game GPU preference. Keep the page file system-managed.

Avoid post-install script damage

Do not immediately run a “debloat and privacy” script that removes Store/App Installer, disables updates and security, changes services and merges registry packs. Use supported settings and remove only apps you can name. Create a recovery snapshot before optional experiments.

Save a known-good state

Record the Windows build and key driver versions. Run a short CPU, memory, storage and GPU validation plus your normal game/application benchmark. Once stable, create a full image with your chosen backup tool. That clean baseline is more valuable than a folder of untracked tweaks.
