Find and Fix CPU or GPU Thermal Throttling

Log temperature, clocks, power and limit flags during a real workload before replacing cooling parts.

Temperature alone is not the verdict

Modern processors boost until a temperature, power, current, voltage or workload limit is reached. A high temperature can be within design while clocks remain strong; a moderate temperature can accompany a strict low power limit. Log all of them together.

Reproduce the slowdown

Use HWiNFO sensors-only logging during the exact game or application for 15–30 minutes. Record CPU package and core temperatures, effective clocks, GPU temperature and hotspot, fan speeds, CPU/GPU power and thermal/power limit flags. Compare the start of the run with the heat-soaked end.

Low-risk fixes

  • Remove dust with power disconnected; hold fans still rather than overspinning them.
  • Confirm intakes and exhausts have clearance and case fans face the intended direction.
  • Re-seat a loose cooler only if you are comfortable with the hardware and have the correct paste/fastening procedure.
  • Improve the fan curve gradually and verify a fail-safe at sensor or software failure.
  • Reduce an unnecessary frame rate cap or use an efficient in-game limit.
  • Update firmware when release notes address fan, power or sensor behavior.

Undervolting and power limits

A conservative undervolt can reduce power and heat at the same performance, but support, controls and stability vary. Change one parameter, stress several workload types and watch for WHEA errors—not only a completed benchmark. A CPU stable in a heavy all-core test can fail at light-load boost transitions.

GPU voltage/frequency curves and power limits can improve efficiency. Save a stock profile, avoid applying an untested curve at startup and validate ray tracing, video and multiple game engines.

Hardware service boundaries

Pump failure, damaged heat pipes, dried interfaces, warped mounting, blocked laptop fins and failing fans need physical service. If the system is under warranty, use the manufacturer process before disassembly. Heat is not solved by disabling thermal protection.
