Storage Cleanup, SSD TRIM and Free-Space Guide

Recover space and maintain SSD or hard-drive performance using Windows-aware cleanup tools.

Low space creates real friction

Windows needs room for cumulative updates, component-store servicing, temporary files, browser and game caches, crash dumps and page-file growth. There is no magic percentage at which an SSD stops working, but keeping roughly 15–20% free is a practical target for heavily used system drives.

Use Cleanup recommendations first

Open Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup recommendations. Review temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced content and unused apps. Inspect Downloads and Recycle Bin carefully. “Previous Windows installation” is a large target, but removing it also removes the easy rollback to the prior feature version.

Enable Storage Sense for automatic temporary-file and Recycle Bin maintenance. Configure cloud content and Downloads conservatively so automation does not remove files you expect to remain local.

Find the real space users

Settings shows storage by category. WizTree or a similar analyzer can quickly expose huge recordings, old installers, virtual machines, game workshop content and forgotten archives. Uninstall games through their launcher and apps through Settings. Do not manually delete WinSxS, Installer, ProgramData or unknown system folders.

To analyze the component store, use an elevated terminal:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

If cleanup is recommended, use the supported operation:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Optimize Drives understands drive type

Search Start for Defragment and Optimize Drives. Windows normally schedules the correct maintenance. Hard drives are defragmented. SSDs receive TRIM/retrim so the device knows which blocks are no longer in use; Windows may perform limited filesystem-aware optimization when required.

Check health before chasing speed

Use the drive manufacturer’s utility or CrystalDiskInfo to review NVMe/S.M.A.R.T. status, temperature, spare capacity, media errors and wear indicators. Back up immediately if health warnings or read errors appear. Cleanup and CHKDSK cannot repair worn flash or a failing controller.
