Windows Security vs. Gaming Performance: Sensible Tradeoffs
Keep Defender, firewall, Secure Boot and memory protections unless a measured, specific compatibility issue justifies a narrow change.
Security is part of performance
Malware, unwanted miners, credential theft and compromised update tools create far larger performance and recovery costs than the small overhead of supported protections. Keep Windows Security real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection, firewall, reputation protection, Secure Boot and automatic updates enabled as the baseline.
Memory integrity and VBS
Memory integrity uses virtualization-based security to protect kernel code integrity. Microsoft notes that older processors without newer hardware execution controls can have a larger performance impact and that incompatible drivers can cause issues. On supported modern Windows 11 hardware it is an important defense.
Do not disable it because a tweak video says “free FPS.” First update incompatible drivers, measure the exact game and assess the threat model. If a specialized offline benchmark requires an A/B test, create a rollback, keep Secure Boot and other protections in mind, and restore the setting afterward. A daily gaming PC that browses, uses Discord and installs mods has real exposure.
Antivirus exclusions
Use exclusions only for a trusted file or game directory when Microsoft or the developer documents a scanning conflict. Never exclude the entire system drive, user profile, Downloads or temporary directories. Verify the source and signature of mods and tools.
Firewall and networking
Allow a game through Windows Firewall when prompted on the correct network profile. Disabling the firewall does not lower internet ping and exposes listening services. Router port forwarding is rarely required for modern client games and must be limited to documented ports and the intended device.
Anti-cheat, overlays and kernel tools
Low-level monitoring, RGB, overclock and input-remapping tools can conflict with anti-cheat. Update them, disable their hooks or remove them for the affected game. Download utilities only from official publishers; “optimizer” executables are a high-risk software category.
