Windows 11 25H2: Update Readiness Checklist

Prepare storage, drivers, recovery and benchmarks before moving a supported PC to Windows 11 version 25H2.

Check support before speed

Windows 11 25H2 is a supported servicing release with cumulative security updates. The right time to install is when Windows Update offers it to the device without a safeguard hold, backups are current and critical apps and drivers are supported.

Before updating

  • Run winver and record the current version/build.
  • Free working space using Cleanup recommendations, but keep the previous installation until validation is complete.
  • Update or remove old VPN, storage filter, anti-cheat, RGB and hardware-monitoring tools with known compatibility issues.
  • Back up files and confirm BitLocker/device-encryption recovery-key access.
  • Create a restore point and keep current network/GPU installers.
  • Check Microsoft’s 25H2 known-issues page and the PC manufacturer’s support page.

After updating

Let Windows Update and Store servicing finish, restart, then check Device Manager, Windows Security and Reliability Monitor. Test sleep, audio, networking, capture, the intended refresh rate and your normal games. Compare against the same benchmark card rather than judging the first boot while indexing and app updates are active.

Keep the old Windows installation during the validation window if disk space allows. If Microsoft has documented a problem, follow release-health mitigation instead of applying unrelated registry tweaks.
