Windows 11 26H1 Is for New 2026 Devices—not an In-Place Feature Update

Microsoft says 26H1 supports new hardware shipping in early 2026 and is not offered as an upgrade from 24H2 or 25H2.

Do not chase the version number

Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information states that version 26H1 is scoped to support new devices coming to market in early 2026. It is not designed as a feature update for existing devices and is not offered as an in-place update from versions 24H2 or 25H2.

That distinction matters for optimization guides: forcing an image meant for a different device path does not create new performance on an existing PC. Stay on the supported release offered through Windows Update for the hardware.

Current servicing picture

As of July 14, 2026, Microsoft lists 26H1, 25H2 and 24H2 in servicing. Home and Pro version 24H2 reaches end of updates on October 13, 2026, while 25H2 continues through October 12, 2027. Edition and release channel affect dates, so use winver and the official lifecycle table rather than a generic countdown.

What to do

  • Existing 24H2/25H2 PCs: install the normal release offered by Windows Update.
  • New 26H1 device: use the OEM recovery and driver path designed for that model.
  • Managed PC: follow organizational servicing policy.
  • Unsupported or modified image: return to official media and supported hardware guidance before troubleshooting performance.
